Point-Based Mark-Recapture Distance Sampling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Avian surveys using point sampling for abundance estimation have either focused on distance sampling or more commonly mark-recapture to correct for detection bias. Combining mark-recapture and distance sampling (MRDS) has become an effective tool for line transects, but it has been largely ignored in point sampling literature. We describe MRDS and show that the previously published methods for point sampling are special cases. Using simulated data and golden-cheeked warbler (Dendroica chrysoparia) survey data from Texas, we demonstrate large differences in abundance estimates resulting from different independence assumptions. Data and code are provided in supplementary materials.

A comparison of linear transect and capture recapture methods results in Iranian Jerboa population density and abundance estimation in Mirabad plains, Shahreza
During a period from spring 2008 till fall 2010, Iranian Jerboa population abundance was estimated using distance (linear transect) and capture-recapture methods in the Mirabad plains near Shahreza city in Isfahan Province. In the study period, during the active time of the species except reproduction time, we tried to live-trap, mark, release and recapture individuals based on Schnabel method ...
متن کاملEstimating animal abundance by distance sampling techniques
Reliable and repeatable methods for estimating animal abundance are fundamental to the effective study and management of New Zealand species. New Zealand scientists and conservation managers currently rely on measures of conspicuousness rather than density for indexing the sizes of many New Zealand animal populations. Distance sampling offers a group of methods which estimate the absolute densi...
متن کاملDetermining optimal population monitoring for rare butterflies.
Determining population viability of rare insects depends on precise, unbiased estimates of population size and other demographic parameters. We used data on the endangered St. Francis' satyr butterfly (Neonympha mitchellii francisci) to evaluate 2 approaches (mark-recapture and transect counts) for population analysis of rare butterflies. Mark-recapture analysis provided by far the greatest amo...
متن کاملMonitoring of the Flat-Tailed Horned Lizard With Methods Incorporating Detection Probability
Difficulty in monitoring the flat-tailed horned lizard (Phrynosoma mcallii) has led to controversy over its conservation status. The difficulty in detecting this species has discouraged large-scale estimates of abundance and led to uncertainty over whether the species exists in population sizes of sufficient size for long-term persistence. We incorporated detection probability into monitoring o...
متن کاملSurvival, movement, and resource use of the butterfly Parnassius clodius
1. A mark–recapture study was conducted on the American Apollo butterfly Parnassius clodius Menetries during three field seasons (1998–2000) to examine its movement patterns over the course of a season within a sagebrush meadow in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, U.S.A. The study examined how resources affected butterfly distribution patterns and used mark–recapture data to gain insight into...
